On this page we view wine labels from the "Chablis" district, in the most northern part of Burgundy. This area produces white wines only, and all are made from the Chardonnay grape. Unfortunately the name Chablis have been used for white jug wines in the US, but real Chablis from Chablis, France is a world class wine.
This first label is a "commune appellation". In this case a " Appellation Chablis Controlee", meaning that the grapes used can come from all parts of Chablis.
This next label is a "Appellation Chablis Premier Cru Controlee". This means that all the grapes come from premier cru rated vineyards. In this case all the grapes come from one premier cru vineyard "Vaillons", the name right under "Chablis Premier Cru" on the label.
This next label is a "Chablis Grand Cru" from one vineyard "Les Clos". All the grapes used have to be from the "Les Clos" vineyard which has the highest rating of Grand Cru.
So Here we have it! Three labels from Chablis, Burgundy. A regular Chablis with a "Appellation Chablis Controlee". A premier cru Chablis, from a single vineyard named "Vaillons" with the name of the vineyard on the label (Vaillons) and "Appellation Chablis Premier Cru Controlee". And last but not least a grand cru Chablis from the single vineyard named "Les Clos" with a "Appellation Chablis Grand Cru Controlee" on the label.
