J. Lohr Chardonnays - tasting notes Mark and the WinePhilosopher hard at work Color: All three Chards had good color. They were all a bright straw to gold with the 1999 "Arroyo Vista" being the most golden. Aromas: 1999 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: Nice buttery notes, good oak, very nice and appealing. Mark: Good varietal character on the nose with obvious oak. Bob: Good varietal character, notes of oak and buttery aromas. WP: Aromas of pineapple, golden apple, oak, and some tropical fruit with a hint of butterscotch. Aromas: 2000 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: Fruity nose, slight oak character, slightly musty Mark: Some off smell? Perhaps yeast, much more yeasty then the '99 Bob: Good varietal, citrus notes, light buttery touch. WP: Silky aromas of golden apple, vanilla, yeast, and oak. Aromas: 1999 Arroyo Vista Chardonnay Colleen: Nice buttery notes, nice! Mark: Full malolactic fermentation with oak, tannins? Varietal character with yeast. Bob: Very buttery! good fruit, Chardonnay varietal. WP: A rich nose of butter, tropical fruit, pear, and toasty oak.
Texture: 1999 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: Very smooth, medium bodied, very nice. Mark: Malo lactic, viscous, mouth coating, towards buttery but not overly so. Bob: Medium to full bodied, clean and crisp. WP: Smooth and coating, with creamy fruit and good balance. Texture: 2000 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: A little bit of thick feel at first. Mark: Malo-lactic but light, mouth coating. Bob: Light and clean. WP: Smooth with good acid/fruit balance. Texture: 1999 Arroyo Vista Chardonnay Colleen: beautiful! dances on the palate, thick. Mark: Lighter in body then expected, not as much coating as expected, but very nice. Bob: Full bodied, clean, good acid. WP: Rich with good length and balance, classy.
Flavor: 1999 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: Yummy! nice oak, just the right balance of fruit and oak. Mark: Chardonnay varietal with vanilla-oak, tannins. Definite yeast in background. Finish: 1999 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: A slightly bitter, or tart finish. Mark: Clean, lingering. Bob: Lingering oak. WP: Soft, with fruit and good balance. Finish: 2000 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: Not a strong finish, hardly there. Mark: Clean, no off flavors. Bob: Clean, good. WP: Smooth and balanced with a touch of crisp acidity. Overall Impression: 1999 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: A very pleasant flavor, I like the flavors better then the finish. I finished this one before the others, in comparison. Mark: Overall - Very nice effort Bob: Good overall, the oak has some slight paper-like quality. WP: A good chard. Balanced and smooth. Its just starting to show the slightest hint of age. Overall Impression: 2000 Riverstone Chardonnay Colleen: Smells better than it drinks. Mark: Overall - Very nice, more yeasty then the '99 Riverstone. Bob: A good, light, clean chard. I prefer this style with less oak. WP: Very nice with some complexity and depth. Overall Impression: 1999 Arroyo Vista Chardonnay Colleen: Love it! Very good overall. Mark: Varietal intense, heavy handed for some, loads of fruit, yeast, buttery. Good by itself, a stand alone. Creamy. Bob: Good California style Chardonnay. Full malolactic fermentation, oak, good fruit. WP: Lots of fruit and classy with some complexity.
