On March 10th of 2001 I was lucky enough to spend time with Max Donson and  interview him about his work and his philosophy. I asked him  about "Fear of Aging" .  The following excerpts are from that interview           WinePhilosopher

Interview

Max Donson:    “Fear of Aging” could be male or female but I chose a female.  She has a very beautiful body with an over sized head. The left side is worked into a mask and it’s all symbolic of her own world.  Getting lower into the bust area, the left bust is full and young while the right is sagging.   If she were clothed you would not see it but she would know it.

On the left shoulder there are slash points, 1,2,3,4, slash 5 you understand.  There are quite a few of them I think It adds up to forty, and it’s just a statement of something that we all go through whether we are enlightened or not, it’s just fear of aging.

WinePhilosopher:   Do the slashes on the arm represent the passing of time?

Max:   Yes.

WP:   And the mask, what does the mask represent? The face is half masked.

Max:      Yes, that’s a social face; it’s a social world. Well it’s the makeup, it’s the hairstyle, it’s what we all go true to make ourselves look young and acceptable and there is nothing wrong with being old.

WP:   Is it saying that the mask being on the side as the slashes means that over time we learn to build our masks thicker and thicker?

Max:   Exactly
