Western Philosophy:

cover   Story of Philosophy: The Lives and Opinions of the World's Greatest Philosophers
by Will Durant

  Our Price: $6.99

This book is a classic on western philosophy. It's been around for many years, is a favorite of many philosophy students, and is still as fresh, and as new as the day it was first printer.  Will Durant brings life and interest to all those philosophies and philosophers we found dry and boring in school. He humanize them and gives insight into their personalities.

The author gives one a feel, and mental image of how western philosophy developed and in turn, how it affects the way we think and perceive reality today, on a social and personal level. This book should be on every seekers bookshelf, and for $6.29 there is no reason not to have it.

cover   Out of My Later Years : The Scientist, Philosopher and Man Portrayed Through His Own Words
by Albert Einstein

Value Priced at: $8.99

How could I not include a book by one of the greatest minds in modern western civilization.  This book gives us some insight into the workings, feelings, and beliefs of Albert Einstein. The book is a collection of essays and letters written by Einstein, and put together in a way that it gives us a real feel for the man, his ideas and his philosophies.

Many of the letters and essays (1934-1950) are short in length and can be read in any order one chooses.  I really enjoyed reading his views on the nature of reality, the universe, God, and the human mind. He also writes about science, politics, morals and emotions, Zionism, people who he respected such as Isaac Newton, Mahatma Gandhi, Carl von Ossietzky, etc.

A great introduction the Albert Einstein, his work, and his believes.

cover     Meditations (Penguin Classics)
by Marcus Aurelius, Maxwell Staniforth (Translator)

Our Price: $9.95

Meditations was written by Marcus Aurelius who became the Emperor of Rome in 161 A.D.  He was forty years old at the time.  Marcus Aurelius was not only the Emperor but also a great philosopher.  He saw the beauty in nature and the great truths it can reveal to mankind.  He was not only a man of wisdom but also showed some compassion, which was looked upon as a weakness in Rome at that time.  Once, during a famine, he sold some of the imperial treasures to feed his starving people. The Roman Senate was not too happy about this, and his response to them was "Nothing we have is our own; even the house we live in is His"

Later in his life Marcus was forced to spend a winter campaign isolated in the icy grasslands along the Danube River. His years of contemplation helped to prepare him for this isolation, and it was here under these conditions that he wrote down his notes, which have become know to us today as the "Meditations of Marcus Aurelius"  This book reveals the emperor's contemplative reverence for nature, and his profound understanding of the human condition within it.

by Stanley Rosen (Editor)

List Price: $35.00
Our Price: $24.50

What did Plato contribute to the philosophy of art? What do Pascal's Pensees really say? Everyone knows the names of these philosophers, but few really understand the ideas at the core of western philosophy.

In this treasury of western thought, the primary sources speak for themselves. Over 35 excerpts from important philosophers -- including Aristotle and Hume, as well as contemporary thinkers -- offer a solid introduction to philosophy for the curious reader.

Leading scholars have carefully chosen the selections, which are arranged according to major discipline, including Philosophy of Religion, Philosophy of Art and Aesthetics, and Metaphysics. These experts have contributed a provocative introductions in their areas of expertise.

Unlike other philosophy collections, this book is not a history, a secondary source, or a quick reference. It stands out as an intelligent and accessible compilation of primary source material.
