 cover Tao Te Ching
by Gia-Fu Feng (Translator), Jane English (Translator), Lao Tsu, Gis-Fu Feng (Translator)

  List Price: $18.00
Our Price: $12.60
You Save: $5.40 (30%)

I first read, a now out of print version of this Taoist classic, the Tao Te Ching in 1971 and it affected me very deeply then, and continues to be an inspiration today.  This book comes right from the core of life, and it's teachings are timeless.

This book teaches the "Way of Life" and how man should be aware of it, and live in accord with it. Some of it's verses may seem simple and vague at first but when studied and meditated upon one sees the profound, and life changing truths that this book reveals.

The author Lao Tsu is said to be born in 604 bc. Speaking wisdom and attracting many followers he refused to set his teachings down. Aware of the dangers inherent in dogma, he was afraid his followers would turn his teachings into an outer and formal rather then an inner and natural faith. He laid down no moral laws of behavior feeling if one lives in accord with the Tao (Way of Life) one's conduct will be correctly governed by their instinct and conscience.

Legend has it that at the end of his life, saddened by man's indisposition to accept the way of life with natural goodness and integral respect, Lao Tsu rode away alone on a water buffalo into the desert away from civilization.  He was meet there by a man named Tin Hsi who had a dream of the sage's coming and persuaded him to record the principles of his philosophy.  These writings became the Tao Te Ching.

This translation captures the true feel of Lao Tsu teachings, and is beautifully laid out with Taoist Art. Each verse is printed in English and on the opposite page in the hand painted,  Chinese characters

Alan Watts gives the western reader a great perception altering introduction to the philosophies of the Upanishads and Advaita Vadanta (non-dualism).  The Book, is a great introduction for the western reader to some of the philosophies of  India.  Beautifully written, witty, and at the same time making some very complex theories palatable.

.How to Know God : The Yoga Aphorisms of Patanjali
by Swami Prabhavananda (Translator), Christopher Isherwood

Our Price: $8.95

I came across this book in my freshman year of collage. While buying books for my first semester I happen to pick this one up out of curiosity. Wow! did it change my life.  To coin a term used back then "It blew my mind".  I had no idea that anyone has ever looked so deeply into the workings of the human mind, the nature of reality, and put together a system of practices one can use to experience the highest truths for oneself.

This book was written by the great sage Patanjali who lived in India more then 2000 years ago.  There is not much information about Patanjali the man, or his life.  Some scholars think he might have been more then one person.  There are many stories

India was rich in philosophy and many dealt with an individual reaching his or hers fullest potential as a human being and in turn; identifying with the highest universal truths.  One of the first and most influence works on philosophy and religion  was the Vedas.  The Vedas are a massive work, hard to understand, and was unavailable to most people.

Patanjali took the essence of the Vedas and other teachings at the time and put them into a system of training your mind and living your life in a way that will bring you to a state of enlightenment.  Many Schools of Yoga philosophy today are based on this book.

No one does a better job then Swami Prabhavananda and Christopher Isherwood of introducing this great work to the West.  I hope this book will bring to you the knowledge and happiness it has brought to me.

cover    .Healing Anger : The Power of Patience from a Buddhist Perspective
by Dalai Lama, Geshe Thupten Jinpa (Translator)

List Price: $12.95
Our Price: $10.36
You Save: $2.59 (20%)

This is one of the best books I have ever read. The teachings that are presented here can be transforming, and you don't have to be a Buddhist, or become one to gain great insights from this book.

Healing Anger is made up from the transcripts of a 4 day talk the Dalai Lama gave on patience in 1993 in Tucson, Arizona.  His teachings at that talk were based on a 10th century (or sometime around then) Buddhist Text called "A Guide for the Bodhisattva" written by the great Buddhist Saint, and scholar Shantideva.

The Dalai Lama gave two talks a day, and each day after the talk there was a question and answer section.  His answers to some really tough questions are clear and to the point.  Some questions asked, I too have had for many years, and have finally hear some satisfying  answers  This alone makes Healing Anger worth reading and  Highly Recommended!  Not to mention that this book has some very high philosophies explain by the Dalai Lama, and one gets a good taste of his wit, humor, and deep insight into the workings of the mind, and the universe.

Sermon on the Mount According to Vedanta
by Swami Prabhavananda

Our Price: $9.95

This book shines so much light on one of Jesus' most profound teaching, the Sermon on the Mount, that I have to wear sunglasses to read it.  When Jesus gave this sermon He was addressing His disciples only.  When He taught to just the disciples he spoke more about higher spiritual truths. The disciples have already done much work on the spiritual path (for starters they gave up everything they had to follow Jesus) and could understand and apply this higher knowledge to their lives and the world.

When Jesus taught, he taught on many levels at the same time, and whomever was listening to, or reading these teachings would receive what they were ready to receive.  Swami Prabhavananda does a super job of bring the higher meaning of these teachings to the reader.

This book interrupts, line by line the Sermon on the Mount, in the light of  Advaita Vedanta, which is one of the major philosophies of India.  From reading this book you will see how the higher teaching of all religions and philosophies are very similar. The truth is the truth.

Swami Prabhavananda belongs to a very respected order of Swami (monks) with a lineage that goes back to the great Indian Saint Sri Ramakrishna who had a strong affection and love for Christ and always used Jesus in his teaching as an example of the ultimate level of spiritual attainment.

This book is a must-read for anyone seeking spiritual truth.

cover  The Warrior Within : The Philosophies of Bruce Lee to Better Understand the World Around You and Achieve a Rewarding Life
by John R. Little, Linda Lee

List Price: $14.95
Our Price: $11.96
You Save: $2.99 (20%)

Until I read this book I did not realize what a great philosopher Bruce Lee was.  I wonder how I could have missed this point, because Bruce Lee could never have reached the level of perfection he reached in Martial Arts without a great understanding of the mind, the body, and the forces of the universe, and that's' what philosophy is all about.  From reading this book I can safely say that Bruce Lee understood and mastered these principles.

Bruce Lee had to deal with the same oppositions we all do on the path to enlightenment.  This book shows how he used philosophy and an inner peace to conquer inner and outer oppositions.  He developed his own philosophy, like he developed his own Martial Arts style, and both are rooted in one of the greatest system of philosophy in the world, Taoism.

This book reveals Bruce's views on the totality of life and putting things into perspective, the concept of Yin and Yang, defeating adversity, and tapping into the inner spiritual force, among others.

cover The Tibetan Book of Living and Dying
by Sogyal Rinpoche

  List Price: $17.00
Our Price: $13.60
You Save: $3.40 (20%)

Amazon.com
In 1927, Walter Evans-Wentz published his translation of an obscure Tibetan Nyingma text and called it the
Tibetan Book of the Dead. Popular Tibetan teacher Sogyal Rinpoche has transformed that ancient text, conveying a perennial philosophy that is at once religious, scientific, and practical. Through extraordinary anecdotes and stories from religious traditions East and West, Rinpoche introduces the reader to the fundamentals of Tibetan Buddhism, moving gradually to the topics of death and dying. Death turns out to be less of a crisis and more of an opportunity. Concepts such as reincarnation, karma, and bardo and practices such as meditation, tonglen, and phowa teach us how to face death constructively. As a result, life becomes much richer. Like Elisabeth Kubler-Ross, Sogyal Rinpoche opens the door to a full experience of death. It is up to the reader to walk through. --Brian Bruya

New York Times Book Review
"As a guide to the Tibetan tradition and its insights into life and death, Sogyal Rinpoche is without peer. . . . Sogyal Rinpoche. . . has delivered the Tibetan equivalent of 'The Divine Comedy.' One could imagine that this is what Dante might have written had he been a Buddhist metaphysician rather than a Christian poet."
