Art makes the road to enlightenment much more enjoyable. It has always expressed and reflected the thoughts, dreams, experiences, and philosophies, of a culture. From primitive man painting on cave walls, to the latest Art being exhibited in galleries around the world.  Art is a way of communicating from soul to soul, from heart to heart, bypassing the limitations of verbal communication. ”One picture is worth a thousand words”.

Knowing about the artist, and what he or she was trying to express or communicate really helps us to understand, enjoy, and sometimes become spiritually uplifted by a piece of art.  It can open up our minds and change our perception of the world around us.   “Art is the demonstration that the ordinary is extraordinary” Ozenfant.   In order to see the “extraordinary” in a work of art, it’s best to take some time, as in wine tasting, to experience it. Even if that time is counted in minutes, use it by focusing with a receptive mind. Try to mentally listen to, or “feel” the piece.

At times art will reawaken in us a certain feeling, a thought, or memory that we may have had experienced at different times in our  lives, but it was so subtle that it was never spoken about or brought to the surface of our consciousness.   Artists have the gifted ability to capture those feelings or insights we have and bring them to our attention. Just those little feelings we have now and then.

“He would not directly represent objects, but would create in the soul exactly those feelings which are felt on seeing them”  J.J. Rousseau.

When an artist evokes these feelings in us, we then see that others have experienced them too, making them more tangible and worthy of our attention.  We all have insights into the more subtle truths of life and ourselves, but artists can communicate or express these truths in a physical form that touches our spiritual essence.

“True art comes from so deep in the psyche that it almost forces itself out. The images come, not from the artists, but through them, so to speak.”

                                                                     Sister Wendy Beckett

I just have to show you one more painting by Claude Monet called “Japanese Bridge, Water Lilies Pond”. Just look at the colors alone, Wow! They bring to me the feelings I experience on a beautiful late spring day. It’s one of those days that I do not have to be anywhere or do anything. I can just relax and enjoy nature in its entire splendor.

Future issues of  “Art and us” will have us looking deeper into art, with all its forms and styles. We will be interviewing Artists and viewing their work.  We will try to better understand what makes these artists tick, how they perceive the universe, and what they are trying to express in their work. I feel we can all benefit from better understanding their insights, and viewing their works. After All! We are all artists because; “To live life with joy is truly an art”. WP

                                                                      Enjoy!
